Air Brake Systems (3 Hour Clinic)

Learning materials include 28 page playbook, and set of colored markers.

Our infamous "COLOR MY TRUCK" brake clinic where technicians show their air systems skills by coloring truck, tractor and trailer air systems, during both the charging and service applications. During this program we review major components such as air dryers and their function along with service and spring brake chambers in various sizes. The program ends with attendees reading a system drawing of a tandem Sterling Tractor. Our reasoning here is that any shop employee who can read an air brake schematic is better suited for the task at hand than one who cannot.

Mechanical Brake Systems (3 Hour Clinic)

Learning materials include 36 page playbook and a pen.

The program begins with a quick review of foundation brake systems on North American built commercial vehicles with air brakes. S-Cam, Wedge and Air Disc. We discuss troubleshooting brake issues with the wheels still on the vehicle, followed by troubleshooting once the wheels and drums have been pulled. We discuss the handling of spring brakes before, during and after installation and disposal. We talk about all five (5) brands of automatic brake adjusters, how they work and some of the care and caution needed when manually adjusting them. Mark and measure testing of brake stroke at every wheel end, is one item that every shop person MUST be made aware of and it's a great idea for shop people to train the drivers on what to look for during pre or post-trip inspections required by law. A short review of how to properly check wheel bearing adjustment using a dial indicator rounds out this program.

Antilock Braking Systems (ABS Workshop) (3 Hour Clinic)

Learning materials include (48 page  playbook.)

The program opens with a review of shop safety measures we believe are critical to us all. Short review of critical  air system pressures along with truck and tractor air system schematics. All major ABS components are reviewed, such as wheel speed sensor, ECU, modulator valves and automatic traction control. The diagnostic procedures we use are provided to attendees, thinking that many shop still do NOT have Shop floor computers with adequate software to assist with ABS diagnostics. We discuss truck and bus systems from Bendix and Meritor Wabco and trailer ABS systems from Bendix, Haldex, Meritor Wabco and Sealco. We close the program reviewing some of the tools now available to diagnose ABS issues.

Trailer Systems Only TSO) (3 Hour Clinic)

Learning materials include (38 page playbook).

Expectations of participants in this program are such that their knowledge of tractor air brake systems is limited, but they do expect the tractor to supply clean dry compressed air to the trailer. Tractor life can be as short as 3-5 years in a fleet while some trailers can be up to 20 years on the scene. Shop employees are expected to know all of the air systems backwards and forwards. They are expected to know all about wheels and wheel bearings regardless of hub style. They are expected to know how to properly install both standard and long stroke spring brake chambers. Some are expected to provide pre-trip underside inspections of trailers for drivers. And they are encouraged NOT TO manually adjust automatic brake adjusters between brake relines, as described in the NTSB bulletin issued in May 2007.

Inside Air Brakes and Valves

Air Systems, Inspection & Adjustment (4 Hour Clinic)

Learning materials include (48 page playbook).

This program was designed to meet or exceed the USA requirements of 396.25 for fleet people. We discuss roadside vehicle inspection, out-of-service criteria. We cover the size and function of brakes on air braked commercial vehicles. We discuss brake chambers like the standard service brake chambers and spring brakes. We discuss the long stroke chambers and the new style chambers with welded yokes. Proper cutting of universal length pushrods is covered along with how to identify the power of a brake. Automatic brake adjuster availability, their installation, lubrication and service is discussed, as is the mark and measure test recommended to all. We discuss the need for S-Cam maintenance, proper wheel bearing adjustment. Air System basics, along with handling of spring brakes after removal from the vehicle is important

Wheel-End Maintenance is Not Magic (4 hour Clinic)

Learning materials include (52 page playbook).

By attending this workshop we are encouraging technicians to help in developing a movement toward "Best Practices" where is comes to wheel handling. In this program we scratch the surface of handling issues, with cast spoke, Stud piloted and hub piloted wheels, brake drums, wheel fasteners, wheel bearing, seals and hubs. We provide some evidence of the damage to wheel hardware when air impact wrenches are used in place of a torque wrench. DID YOU KNOW, that mishandling of an air impact wrench can reduce the quality of a Grade 8 fastener to that of a Grade 2 fastener? This is a "GET SMARTER ABOUT WHEEL-ENDS" program, designed to help fleet shop employees do well without creating wheel-off occurrences due to neglect or lack of training. This is NOT a program for Tire Handlers, nor is it a "CERTIFICATION" program.
